A Short, Easy Guide to Avoiding Bruising with Botox & Fillers

Nothing can stop time, but Botox and dermal fillers come pretty close! In as little as 15 minutes, people can turn back the clock and enjoy smoother skin, plumper lips, and a big boost in confidence that will last for several months. But these are injectable treatments—what if you bruise easily? The last thing you want is to spend money enhancing your face and have to wait for big, noticeable splotches to heal. Thankfully, you don’t have to just hope and cross your fingers, because with a little preparation and knowledge, bruising won’t throw off your new look.

Tip 1: Trust the Professionals

This might seem like a no-brainer, but in a world of TikTok trends, DIYers, and discount hunting, it’s important to emphasize that Botox and dermal filler treatments should only be provided by a professional, such as a doctor, nurse, or nurse practitioner. People looking to save on aesthetic services by visiting someone without medical training usually leave with a lackluster cosmetic result as well as excessive bruising. It takes a refined touch to inject the face in a way that ensures the process is comfortable, effective, and safe.

Tip 2: Avoid Certain Medications & Supplements

Bruising is the result of a damaged blood vessel and bleeding beneath the skin, so it’s best to not take medications and supplements that are known to thin your blood and increase the chances of this happening.

This includes common medications like aspirin and various NSAIDs (such as Advil, Motrin, naproxen, and ibuprofen). Supplements that can have the same effect include vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, garlic, turmeric, chia seeds, Ginkgo biloba, and flaxseed oil (and other oils high in omega-3 fatty acids). If you take prescribed medication that thins your blood, be sure to talk to your doctor and bring this up with your injector BEFORE your treatment.

Tip 3: Take a (Short) Break from Exercise

Exercise gets your blood pumping, and while it’s one of the best things you can do for your physical and mental health, it can also make any irritation or bruising from the injections worse. For aesthetically minded people getting these services, relaxing for a day or (ideally) two and not going to the gym can be tough, but it’s worth the wait! This will allow the blood vessels in your face to heal faster so you can avoid obvious discoloration and soreness.

With the right professional and a few common-sense practices, bruising will be the last thing on your mind when you see your newly fresh and bright face in the mirror.
