We Make Saving with Dental Insurance Simple

Whether you get dental insurance through your job or have a private plan, your policy is only one part of the equation. The other half is visiting a dentist who helps you understand and get the most out of your benefits. At Grand Dental Studio, we’re eager to help you complete this puzzle. No matter your provider, we’ll explain what is and isn’t covered, answer any questions, and help you maximize your benefits at every opportunity.

Dental insurance is quite complicated (and we say this as people who deal with it every day!), so it’s OK if you don’t understand exactly how it works. We’re happy to cover the basics below, but to learn how we could use your specific plan to help you and your family, you’re always welcome to give us a call.

How Dental Insurance Works

When you sign up for a dental insurance plan, you pay a premium that entitles you to a wide range of benefits that help you spend less on oral healthcare. The fee schedule includes all of the services covered by the plan as well as how much it will pay.

While this varies from plan to plan, most follow a 100-80-50 structure, which breaks down like this:

  • Preventive services: Treatments designed to stop problems before they start, like checkups, cleanings, fluoride, and most X-rays are covered 100%.
  • Minor restorative: Small fixes like fillings or bonding for minor chips, cracks, or cavities are covered 80%.
  • Major restorative: Crowns, dentures, and dental implants, intended to rebuild severely damaged teeth or replace them, are covered 50%.

Cosmetic services such as whitening and veneers are usually NOT covered because they are elective procedures. This setup is why our team strongly recommends getting your two checkups and cleanings each year. Both are entirely covered by the majority of insurance plans, and they help you avoid problems that may call for more expensive procedures in the future.

What is the Difference Between Dental & Medical Insurance?

While dental and medical insurance have a lot of similarities (premiums, annual maximums, coverage that varies from service to service, etc.), the biggest difference is how they should be used.

Medical insurance is primarily designed to help someone after a serious health issue has developed, be it an illness or injury. That’s why your medical insurance can offer a lot of support after a heart attack or car wreck.

But dental insurance is all about prevention. Ideally, a person should mostly use it for checkups and cleanings so they can avoid cavities, gum disease, and tooth loss over time. This not only leads to better oral health, but also less spent on dental care, a win-win.

In-Network vs. Out-of-Network

You’ve probably seen the terms “in-network” and “out-of-network” in reference to dental insurance. What do they mean, and how do they apply to you?

In-Network Coverage

Being “in-network” simply means a dental practice has a contract with an insurance provider to offer their services at certain rates. Because of this partnership, patients often receive larger discounts, benefits get verified faster, and claims are fulfilled quickly.

Grand Dental Studio is proud to be in-network with:

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield Texas
  • Delta Dental Premier
  • And more! Call us to see how we can use your plan.

Out-of-Network

When a practice is “out-of-network” with an insurance provider, that means they have no agreement in place as far as what treatments will cost or how much will be covered. Grand Dental Studio still accepts out-of-network dental insurance plans. We will never reject your policy!

Often, the savings are similar to being in-network, but the specifics can vary from policy to policy. We’ll discuss all of these details before providing treatment so you know exactly what to expect when it comes to cost.
