How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants are actually small metal posts that can be surgically positioned in the jawbone beneath your gums. Once in place, they can be used to securely mount replacement teeth like dental crowns or dentures. Because dental implants can fully fuse with your jawbone, they provide permanent and stable support for artificial teeth.

Why Choose Dental Implants Instead of Other Restorative Methods?

Dentures and dental bridges mounted to dental implants won’t slip or shift and can improve both eating and speaking abilities. Dental implant secured tooth replacements also feel more natural than conventional dental bridges and dentures. For many patients, traditional bridges and dentures are simply not comfortable enough for daily support, and often cause soreness and gagging. Traditional bridges must be attached to healthy teeth on either side of the space left by a missing tooth. With dental implants no adjacent teeth are reduced or made vulnerable to hold your new tooth in place. Additionally, dental implants are the only restorative option which can stop tooth loss related bone loss and preserve your youthful facial features.

Two Types of Dental Implants

There are two main types of dental implants, full sized and mini implants. For patients who lack the minimum bone density requirements to receive full dental implants, mini dental implants are a great alternative.

  • Full Dental Implants are surgically implanted directly into the jawbone. Once the surrounding gum tissue has healed, a secondary surgery is needed to connect an abutment post before an artificial tooth replacement can be attached.
  • Mini Dental Implants consist of a metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone just below the gum tissue. As the gums heal, the frame fuses to the jawbone. Abutment posts, which are already attached to the frame, protrude through the gums so that artificial teeth can then be mounted.

dental implants ftw!If you have teeth missing from your smile, you may find it difficult to be one hundred percent confident in your smile. Though some people may not think twice about it, having an incomplete smile can be detrimental to the rest of your mouth, and it is important to take care of it as soon as possible. Dentures and partials are one way to fix the problem, but you may be looking for a more permanent solution. Because our doctors understand the importance of having a full smile, he is able to offer dental implants to his patients.

The process of dental implanting begins with a consultation with one of our doctors. Dr. Michael Kirk has had extensive postgraduate training on dental implanting from the University of Texas, so he is more than capable of taking care of your procedure. During the consultation, he will be able to assess your smile in its current state, as well as ask you about your long term goals regarding your smile. You will also have that opportunity to bring up any questions or concerns you have regarding your procedure, as we want you to be informed the entire time. If you are considered a candidate, that is where the real fun begins!

A titanium screw will be embedded into your jaw bone. This screw will act as a replacement for the empty socket, and will fuse with your natural bone over time. After the screw, the abutment is added, which is essentially a support system for the implant and the crown. The crown is then placed on top, completing your look. In the end, you’re left with a beautiful smile!

If you’re curious as to how dental implants can help change your smile for the better, make an appointment, and we’ll be more than happy to help!

Replace Missing Teeth with Dental Implants

March 15, 2013

dental implantsHave you been hiding your smile because you’re missing teeth? Stop hiding, and come to Grand Dental Nichols Hills to learn how dental implants can be used to restore and improve your smile.

Dr. Michael Kirk studied dental implants extensively at the postgraduate level at the University of Texas and wants to put his expertise to good use and help improve your smile. A dental implant consists of a titanium post inserted into your jawbone and the crown that will go on top to replace the missing tooth. The post will bond with your jawbone to create a solid, secure foundation for your implant that mimics the roof of a natural tooth.

With all of today’s advances in anesthetics and medications, we will try our best to keep the procedure as comfortable for you as possible. Thanks to Dr. Kirk’s expertise, we can place the implants and restore your smile all in our office, so you won’t need to visit anyone else. We understand our patients have busy lives, so we work hard to make our dental treatments fit into your schedule as seamlessly as possible.

It is important to replace your missing teeth to reduce your risk of jawbone shrinkage and the risk that you’ll lose other teeth.  Dental implants are the most permanent method to restore missing teeth and give you a beautiful smile once again. Give us a call to see if this solution is right for you.
