How to Protect Yourself from Gum Disease in 3 Easy Steps!

September 1, 2018

Filed under: Uncategorized — Dr. Michael Kirk @ 12:07 pm

healthy gums 2018 is flying by in a flash, and it’s already September! While most people associate this time of the year with cooler weather and the leaves starting to change, Dr. Michael Kirk and Dr. Connor Hieger of Grand Dental Studio want people to know that September is actually National Gum Care Month as well. Even though much of dentistry is focused on the teeth, the health of the gums is just as important when it comes to having a beautiful, long-lasting smile. To make sure you avoid gum disease in Oklahoma City, be sure to follow these 3 simple tips!

1. More Mindful Brushing

Did you know that gum disease is actually the most common dental problem in the world? It’s true! Similar to cavities, gum disease is a bacterial infection that can develop along the gum line if a person doesn’t clean their mouth on a regular basis. Early symptoms include red, swollen, and tender gums that bleed quite easily, and it can often lead to tooth loss if left untreated!

To keep your entire smile protected, make sure that whenever you brush your teeth (at least twice a day), you brush where your teeth meet your gums as well. This will help to break up and remove bacteria and leftover food particles that are the root cause of the infection.

2. Don’t Forget to Floss!

According to the latest research, only 4 in 10 Americans floss at least once a day, and 20% actually NEVER floss. When it comes to preventing gum disease, consistent flossing is key, as it’s able to remove bacteria from below the gum line that toothbrushes simply can’t reach.

Thankfully, the American Dental Association recommends that people only need to floss about once a day, preferably at night after their last meal. When doing so, use a gentle touch so you don’t hurt your gums, and make sure the floss is gliding slightly below your gum line so it can clean those hard to reach spots. A fun side effect is that this will help improve your breath dramatically!

3. Be a Regular with Your Dentist

Even the most diligent brushers and flossers slip up sometimes and can develop this oral infection, but in the battle against gum disease, you’re far from alone.

At Grand Dental Studio, your dentist in Oklahoma City performs dedicated periodontal (gum) screenings at every checkup, looking for the smallest signs of infection. Dr. Kirk and Dr. Hieger’s highly-trained eyes will be able to spot any issues way earlier than you, which is why you should keep up with your regular preventive appointments. With routine checkups, they can find and take care of a problem while it is still small and easy to treat. And, if you believe that you might already be suffering from gum disease, they and our team can offer you a number of treatment options specially-designed to get rid of it.
